A fundraiser to support Robert Dziekanski’s mother in legal actions in connection with Dziekanski’s death was held Saturday at the Pacific Inn.

The South Surrey event included such high-profile guests as Consul General of Poland Krzysztof Czapia and MLA Mike Farnworth, as well as a performance of He Waits, a song inspired by the events leading to Dziekanksi’s death.

The Polish man died at Vancouver airport on Oct. 14, 2007, after he was shocked multiple times with a Taser by police. The incident is now the subject of the Braidwood Commission.

Lawyers for Dziekanski’s mother Zofia Cisowski announced Saturday they will urge the Polish prosecutor to re-open the case and that Polish authorities demand full co-operation from Canada.

The event went “extremely well,” organizer Zygmunt Riddle said. Approximately 200 people attended. A final tally of funds raised was to be announced late Tuesday, with at least 50 per cent of ticket-sale proceeds to benefit the Zofia Victims Trust account.

The money helps Cisowski with legal, medical and living expenses.
